Description

Corset liver is rare deformity of the liver at one time ascribed to the wearing of a tight corset. This is now viewed as a pseudolesion or benign malformation of the liver.

Corset liver features one or more transverse indentations in the surface of the right lobe, in most cases associated with an overlying rib.

The pathogenesis is presumed to be focal compression which causes fibrosis in the subcapsular region with tissue retraction, causing an indentation. Risk factors may include kyphoscoliosis and rib malformations.

In the past it was assumed that long-term wearing of a tight corset would compress ribs into the liver. This was never proven as the mechanism.

The indentations may be palpable on physical exam.

On imaging studies the indentations may outline what appears to be a liver mass. This can lead to an unnecessary work-up.
