Description

The measured pulmonary diffusing capacity needs to be corrected for anemia.

According to Dinakara et al:

corrected diffusing capacity in mL per min per mm Hg =

= (uncorrected diffusing capacity) / (0.06965 * (hemoglobin in g/dL))

diffusing capacity as percent of normal =

= 6.965 * (hemoglobin in g/dL)

where:

• The standard hemoglobin concentration is 14.4 g/dL.

According to Cotes et al:

hemoglobin-adjusted diffusing capacity in mL per min per mm Hg =

= (uncorrected diffusing capacity) * X

X =

= ((hemoglobin in g/dL) + (14.6 * (diffusing capacity per liter of lung volume))) / (1 + (diffusing capacity per liter of lung volume)) =

= ((hemoglobin in g/dL) + 10.22) / (1.7 * (hemoglobin in g/dL))

where:

• The diffusing capacity per liter of lung volume is 0.7.
