Description

Several formulas are available for adjusting a blood gas pH determined at 37 °C for a patient's body temperature. For elevated body temperatures, the pH is reduced; for reduced body temperatures, the pH is increased.

corrected pH =

= (measured pH) + (((X) + ((0.0065) * (7.4 - (measured pH)))) * ((patient temperature in °C) - 37))

where

• X = (-0.0147) in Instrumentation Laboratory (IL) 1301 & 1303

• X = (-0.0146) in the Radiometer ABL-3

corrected pH =

= (measured pH) - ((Y) * ((patient temperature in °C) -37))

where:

• Y = (0.015) in Corning instruments (models 158, 168, 170, 178 and 288)

• Y = (0.0146) in the Instrumentation Laboratory (IL) model 813
