Description

A liver transplant may significantly impact production of coagulation factors. Some patients with a coagulation deficiency may have correction of the deficiency after a liver transplant.

Features:

(1) presence of a coagulation factor deficiency prior to the liver transplantation

(2) absence of the deficiency after the liver transplantation

This has been reported for

(1) Factor XI deficiency

(2) Factor VIII deficiency

(3) Factor IX deficiency

There are 2 possible mechanisms:

(1) the liver is the site of production for the previously missing or defective coagulation factor.

(2) immunosuppression has reduced production an anti-factor antibody
