Description

Colonization with a Candida species may precede infection by several days. The Corrected Colonization Index (CCI) is one way of monitoring surveillance cultures for Candida in a high risk patient.

Parameters:

(1) number of distinct body sites (dbs) that are cultured, excluding blood

(1) number of distinct body sites (dbs) that are shown to be colonized with a single genotype of Candida

(3) number of the sites with light growth of the Candida genotype

(4) number of sites with moderate growth of the Candida genotype

(5) number of sites with heavy growth of the Candida genotype

colonization index =

= (number of distinct body sites that are colonized) / (number of distinct body sites surveyed)

corrected colonization index =

= (colonization index) * (number of distinct body sites showing heavy growth) / (number of distinct body sites that are positive) =

= (number of sites showing heavy growth) / (number of distinct body sites surveyed)

Interpretation:

• minimum CCI: 0

• maximum CCI: 1

• The higher the CCI the greater the risk of infection.
