A percent solution is simple to formulate but sometimes the molar equivalent needs to be known.

A percent solution may be one of the following:

(1) weight per volume (w/v): grams per 100 mL solution (g/dL)

(2) volume per volume (v/v): mL per 100 mL solution

(3) weight per weight (w/w): grams per 100 grams mixture

For a weight per volume solution:

moles of solute per liter =

= 10 dL/L * (grams of solute)/ dL / (molecular weight of solute in grams/mole)

(grams of solute) / dL =

= (moles of solute per liter) * (molecular weight in grams/mole) / 10
