Description

House mites are minute and relatively innocuous arthropods that feed on shed epidermal cells and other debris around the house. Unfortunately atopic individuals may be very sensitive to them. Control of the little critters involves an ongoing effort with great resolve.

Control on clothing and bedding:

(1) Wash bedsheets and pillowcases frequently (at least weekly) in hot water (>= 55°C).

(2) Cover anything that cannot be cleaned regularly (mattress, quilt and pillows) in impermeable covers.

(3) Wash nightclothing in hot water (>= 55°C) regularly, especially in winter.

Control in the environment:

(1) Replace carpets if possible.

(1a) Use a wooden, linoleum or other solid floor covering.

(1b) If unable to replace carpet, treat regularly with acaricides or tannic acid. Unfortunately a patient with allergies may react to acaricides.

(2) Replace any upholstered furniture with wooden or leather-covered furniture.

(3) Minimize objects that can accumulate dust.

(4) Keep the house as clean as possible and free of dust.

(4a) Minimize dust dispersal while cleaning.

(4b) Use a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter. Filter bags should be extra thick to reduce dust leakage.

(5) Soft toys should be either washed in hot water (>= 55°C) or frozen.
