Description

Ear irrigation is a relatively simple way to remove impacted cerumen (ear wax). However, it is not without its complications. Syringing should not be performed if contraindications are present.


Contraindications:

(1) patent tympanostomy tube present

(2) perforated tympanic membrane

(3) foreign body in external auditory canal

(4) inability to sit upright

(5) inability to sit still

(6) an opening into the mastoid

(7) otitis externa

(8) history of middle ear disease

(9) history of ear surgery

(10) vertigo or other inner ear problem

(11) radiation to the region

(12) lack of patient consent

 

Complications of syringing include:

(1) hearing loss

(2) vertigo

(3) facial nerve palsy

(4) infection of the external or middle ear

(5) trauma to the external ear canal or tympanic membrane

(6) pain

(7) bleeding
