Description

Percutaneous Mitral Commissurotomy (PMC) can be a useful technique for managing mitral stenosis (MS) in selected patients. Some patients should not have the procedure performed because of complications or the need for valve replacement.

Contraindications to performing PMC in a patient with mitral stenosis:

(1) mitral valve area > 1.5 square cm

(2) thrombus in the left atrium

(3) moderate to severe mitral regurgitation (insufficiency)

(4) absence of commissural fusion

(5) severe concomitant aortic valve disease

(6) severe combined tricuspid stenosis and regurgitation

(7) concomitant coronary artery disease requiring coronary artery bypass graft surgery
