Description

Nonoperative reduction of an intussusception should not be attempted if there are contraindications present.


Patient selection: pediatric patient with intussusception

 

Contraindications for nonoperative reduction:

(1) hemodynamic instability

(2) peritonitis

(3) signs of perforation on abdominal imaging studies (pneumoperitoneum)

 

If contraindications are present, then urgent or emergency surgical reduction needs to be performed.
