Description

Certain ophthalmic conditions are contraindications for SCUBA diving. A patient with one of these conditions should consult an ophthalmologist familiar with hyperbaric conditions before diving in order to determine the risks involved.

Conditions affecting the eyes that may be contraindications to diving:

(1) intraocular gas

(2) presence of a hollow implant within the orbit

(3) any infectious or inflammatory ocular disorder causing pain, photophobia, diplopia or decreased visual acuity

(4) recent ophthalmic surgery prior to completion of convalescent period

(5) functioning glaucoma filter

(6) inadequate vision to function safely in the underwater environment

(7) visually significant deficits from a previous episode of decompression sickness or arterial gas embolism

Some conditions (a mild inflammatory condition, glaucoma filter, impaired visual acuity, recent ophthalmic surgery) may be relative contraindications. Knowledge of the conditions surrounding the dive (depths involved, duration, availability of skilled medical resources, necessity) may help in making an informed decision and determining if any interventions can mitigate the dangers involved..
