Accidental exposure to antineoplastic drugs can be toxic. It is important to prevent contamination of the environment by these agents.
Situations where contamination may arise:
(1) preparation of the drug for administration in the pharmacy
(2) breakage or leakage of infusion bags
(3) entry into the bag for the infusion
(4) disposal of the infusion equipment after use
Surfaces that may become contaminated:
(1) the outside of drug vials or infusion bags
(2) countertops or other work surfaces
(3) furniture
Preparation of antineoplastic drugs should be performed in specific preparation hoods with air filtration.
(1) Pharmacy technologists should wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
(2) Surfaces should be covered with absorbent, disposable liners.
(3) The air filters should be handled as if contaminated.
(4) The surfaces of prepared containers should be decontaminated and placed in transport bags.
Spill kits appropriate to the antineoplastic agents should be readily available to control any spills that might occur.
