Description

A person who wears contact lenses may develop a keratitis due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa.


Features of pathogenesis:

(1) a biofilm is important for Pseudomonas attachment and persistence

(2) the bacteria tend to occupy the posterior surface of the lens where they come into direct contact with the cornea

 

Risk factors for Pseudomonas aeruginosa

(1) failure to use a cleaning solution

(2) using a cleaning solution that is not effective in inhibiting Pseudomonas

(3) prolonged wear

(4) exposure to a contaminated source (water, plant, soil, etc)

(5) colonization of the wearer by Pseudomonas aeruginosa

(6) purchase of lenses from a source outside of healthcare
