Sexual abuse during childhood can leave long-lasting scars on the victims. A number of problems may be encountered in later life as a result.
Sexual abuse during childhood may increase the risk of the following in later life:
(1) depression and/or suicidal thoughts or actions
(2) anxiety disorder
(3) substance abuse
(4) antisocial behavior
(5) poor self-esteem
(6) physical health problems, including infection with a sexually transmitted disease
(7) post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
(8) sexually inappropriate behaviors
(9) abusive behaviors towards others
(10) eating disorders
(11) internalizing and/or externalizing psychiatric disorders
(12) distrust and alienation
