Description

The Congential Varicella Syndrome is rare but can be associated with significant morbidity and mortality.


 

Fetus at risk: nonimmune mother exposed to Varicella-Zoster Virus (VZV) in the first or second trimester (prior to 26 weeks of gestation).

 

Clinical features may include:

(1) chronic skin infection or skin scarring in a dermatomal pattern

(2) encephalitis, cerebral calcifications, microcephalus and/or hydrocephalus with neurologic deficits including autonomic dysfunction

(3) intestinal atresia

(4) hepatic calcifications

(5) retinal lesions or cataracts

(6) limb hypoplasia or absent digits

(7) fetal hydrops

(8) hearing deficits

(9) growth retardation

(10) intrauterine fetal demise
