A worker may enter a cargo tank (truck, train, other) to perform a number of tasks. These can entail a number of hazards associated with a confined space.
Functions of the worker inside the tank:
(1) inspect
(2) welding
(3) painting or sealing
(4) washing
Sources of hazard:
(1) hazardous vapors or liquids from the previous cargo
(2) hazardous vapors associated with repair activities such as welding
(3) reduced oxygen atmosphere
(4) engulfment (grain drowning, other) or drowning
Risk mitigation:
(1) respiratory protection which may include an oxygen supply
(2) buddy system
(3) harness with attached rope for pulling the worker out
(4) other suitable PPE
