A number of conditions may mimic retinitis pigmentosa.
Features:
(1) association with known cause
(2) absence of genetic evidence
(3) absence of syndromic findings
Causes of pseudoretinitis pigmentosa:
(1) drugs (thioridazine, chlorpromazine, hydroxychloroquine, other quinolones)
(2) infection (syphilis, Lyme disease, rubella, measles, other viral infections)
(3) post-inflammatoryor autoimmune retinopathy (see below)
(4) vitamin A deficiency
(5) paraneoplastic finding
(6) following trauma
(7) siderosis bulbi
(8) old retinal detachment
(9) pigmented paravenousretinochoroidal atrophy
(10) acute zonal occult outer retinopathy
Post-inflammatory retinopathy:
(1) sarcoidosis
(2) SLE
(3) acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy
(4) birdshot chorioretinopathy
(5) serpiginous choroidopathy
(6) diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis
