Description

Acute renal failure may be precipitated by intense exercise if certain conditions are present.

Conditions associated with exercise-induced acute renal failure:

(1) hereditary renal hypouricemia (associated with increased urinary excretion of uric acid)

(2) acute rhabdomyolysis with myoglobinuria

(3) nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), especially in a person with pre-existing renal disease

(4) intravascular hemolysis with hemoglobinuria

Allopurinol may prevent the acute renal failure seen with renal hypouricemia.
