Description

A number of conditions may predispose a patient to bacteremia with Yersinia enterocolitica.

Conditions that predispose a patient to bacteremia with Yersinia enterocolitica:

(1) iron-overload state,

(1a) hemochromatosis

(1b) transfusion-related iron overload associated with thalassemia or other hemoglobinopathy

(1c) transfusion-related iron overload associated with myelodysplasia

(1d) acute iron poisoning

(1e) deforaxamine therapy for iron overload

(1f) other condition associated with iron overload

(2) cirrhosis

(3) alcoholism

(4) diabetes mellitus

(5) malnutrition

(6) immunosuppression

(7) immunodeficiency

The mortality rate for a patient with bacteremia in the setting of a predisposing factor can be high.

Transient bacteremia in apparently healthy people must also occur in order to explain blood-transfusion transmitted infection.
