Symblepharon is fusion of an eyelid to an opposing surface, such as adjacent bulbar conjunctiva.
Mechanism: scarring secondary to inflammation and damage to the conjunctiva
Conditions associated with symblepharon:
(1) physical trauma
(2) chemical burn
(3) inflammatory adverse drug reaction
(4) pemphigus, including paraneoplastic
(5) Stevens-Johnson reaction
(6) epidemic keratoconjunctivitis
(7) congenital symblepharon
(8) cyanoacrylate tissue adhesive
