Description

Xanthomas can arise as a result of a number of conditions.


Hereditary disorders:

(1) familial hypercholesterolemia (FH)

(2) familial dysbetalipoproteinemia

(3) sitosterolemia

(4) cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX)

 

Acquired in association with hyperlipidemia:

(1) thyroid disease

(2) diabetes mellitus

(3) pancreatitis (especially with chylomicronemia)

(4) obstructive liver disease

(5) paraneoplastic

(6) other hyperlipidemia

 

Other acquired:

(1) localized phenomenon without systemic disorder
