Description

An intubated patient may have an unplanned extubation for a number of reasons.


deliberately by the provider.

 

Risk factors for unplanned extubation:

(1) restlessness or agitation of the patient

(2) self-extubation by the patient

(3) failure to restrain patient

(4) poor fixation of the endotracheal tube (excessive mobility; loose or grossly contaminated tape)

(5) accidental tension placed on the tube during bedside procedure, nursing care, patent manipulation, etc
