Description

A number of conditions may be associated with abnormal loss of magnesium in the urine (magnesium wastage).


Drugs associated with magnesium wastage:

(1) diuretics

(2) aminoglycosides

(3) amphotericin B

(4) calcineurin inhibitors (cyclosporine, tacrolimus)

(5) epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors (cetuximab)

(6) cytotoxic drugs (cisplatin, carboplatin)

 

Other conditions associated with magnesium wastage:

(1) alcohol abuse

(2) diabetes

(3) hyperthyroidism

(4) hyperparathyroidism

(5) other causes of hypercalcemia

 

The fractional excretion of magnesium is increased in patients with renal-wasting of magnesium.
