Description

Glutathione is a tripeptide that contains cysteine and that has antioxidant activity. Low levels of glutathione may interfere with the body's ability to deal with free radicals and oxidative stress.


Primary conditions associated with glutathione deficiency:

(1) inherited mitochrondrial disorders (organic acidemias, others)

 

Secondary conditions associated with glutathione deficiency:

(1) starvation

(2) fasting

(3) alcoholism

(4) chronic viral infections (HCV, HIV disease)

(5) acquired mitochondrial disorders

(6) uncontrolled inflammatory reactions

(7) excessive generation of free radicals
