Description

A number of conditions may be complicated by disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). Identifying the cause of DIC is important in the management of a patient.


Infection:

(1) sepsis

(2) other severe infection

 

Hematopoietic malignancy:

(1) acute promyelocytic leukemia (APML)

(2) acute leukemia

(3) malignant lymphoma

(4) myeloproliferative neoplasm

 

Tumor:

(1) solid malignancy (especially if metastatic)

(2) vascular tumor

 

Tissue damage:

(1) burn

(2) trauma (including fat embolism)

(3) heat stroke

(4) rhabdomyolysis

(5) surgery

(6) neurotrauma

 

Vascular disease:

(1) aortic aneurysm

(2) giant hemangioma

(3) vasculitis

 

Organ disease:

(1) liver disease

(2) acute pancreatitis

 

Shock

 

Hemolytic transfusion reaction

 

Snake bite

 

Hypothermia

 

Obstetrical:

(1) amniotic fluid embolism

(2) placental abruption

(3) pre-eclampsia

 

Transplant rejection

 

Drugs of abuse (amphetamine, cocaine, other)
