Description

A number of conditions may be associated with cerebellar ataxia.


 

Nutritional causes:

(1) thiamine deficiency

(2) vitamin E deficiency

 

Drug or therapeutic causes:

(1) anticonvulsant drugs

(2) benzodiazepines

(3) narcotics

(4) chemotherapy

(5) lithium

(6) vaccine

 

Toxic exposures:

(1) ethanol

(2) mercury poisoning

 

Hereditary or neurodegenerative:

(1) autosomal dominant spinocerebellar ataxias

(2) autosomal recessive cerebellar ataxias

(3) X-linked cerebellar ataxias

(4) multiple system atrophy, cerebellar type
(5) sporadic ataxia with adult onset

 

Vascular causes:

(1) infarction

(2) hemorrhage

(3) venous sinus thrombosis

 

Neoplastic causes:

(1) primary brain tumor

(2) metastatic tumor to brain

(3) paraneoplastic cerebellar degeneration

 

Infectious cerebrellitis (see 17.63.06)

 

Immune or inflammatory causes:

(1) post-infectious cerebellitis

(2) multiple sclerosis

(3) acute demyelinating encephalomyelitis

(4) other autoimmune disorders
