Pruritus ani may be associated with a number of triggering conditions.
Conditions associated with pruritus ani:
(1) hemorrhoids
(2) drugs (gemcitabine)
(3) Enterobius vermicularis
(4) iron deficiency
(5) uremic pruritus
(6) cholestatic pruritus
(7) perianal or anal dysplasia or carcinoma, including Paget's and Bowen's disease
(8) psoriasis
(9) atopic or allergic dermatitis
(10) lichen sclerosus
(11) foods (see below)
(12) Candida albicans
(13) Herpes simplex virus
(14) condyloma acuminata
(15) sexually-transmitted disease
(16) anal fissure
(17) anal moisture or fecal leakage
Foods associated with pruritis ani:
(1) caffeine (tea, cola)
(2) chocolate
(3) citrus fruits and juices
(4) tomatoes and tomato products
(5) beer, wine and liquors
(6) spicy foods
(7) dairy products
Sometimes no cause is identified (idiopathic).
