Renal subcapsular hematomas can range in size. A large hematoma may be associated with anemia and retroperitoneal hemorrhage. The hematoma can be caused by several conditions.
Conditions associated with a renal subcapsular hematoma:
(1) traumatic (blunt or penetrating)
(2) iatrogenic (lithotripsy, renal biopsy, angiography, other)
(3) drug-related (thrombolysis, anticoagulation)
(4) vascular-related (aneurysm, vasculitis)
(5) tumor-related (renal cell, angioleiomyoma, other)
(6) dialysis-related
A spontaneous/idiopathic hematoma is considered when no cause is found despite a careful investigation.
