Description

Perilunate dislocations are relatively uncommon and tend to occur in young adult males.


 

Requirements:

(1) high energy injury with the wrist in hyperextension

(2) closed radial physis (a pediatric patient is more likely to have a failure at the distal physis)

(3) good bone density (a patient with osteoporosis is more likely to have a fracture of the distal radius)

 

Risk factors:

(1) greater energy

(2) conditions associated with laxity of the ligaments

 

Conditions associated with perilunate dislocation:

(1) fall from height

(2) vehicle accident (motor cycle, bicycle, automobile, etc)

(3) sports injury, typically a contact sport

(4) industrial accident

(5) any fall on an outstretched hand
