Description

A number of conditions may make admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) appropriate for a patient with acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).

Patient select: acute ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction

Conditions

(1) cardiac arrest

(2) hemodynamic support before or after PCI (mechanical or pharmacological)

(3) respiratory failure requiring support (noninvasive, invasive)

(4) sustained ventricular tachycardia before or after PCI

(5) atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response after PCI

(6) hypertension requiring IV infusion therapy

(7) therapy with tissue plasminogen activator (tPA)

(8) intractable chest pain after PCI

(9) high-degree heart block after PCI

If the patient has one or more of these conditions, then admission to the ICU is appropriate.
