Description

Sartelli et al proposed a CT classification for acute diverticulitis of the left colon. This is based on the staging system of Hinchey/Hughes and can be used to clinically stratify patient.. The authors are from multiple hospitals from around the world.

Patient selection: acute diverticulitis of the left colon

Parameters:

(1) extent of infection - uncomplicated versus complicated

(2) pericolic changes (air bubbles or a little fluid without abscess)

(3) diameter of abscess in cm

(4) distant free air (> 5 cm from inflamed bowel segment)

(5) diffuse fluid

Extent of Infection

Designation

limited to the colon; does not extend to the peritoneum

uncomplicated

beyond the colon

complicated

Complicated diverticulitis is then staged.
