Description

Wells et al reported the composite physiologic index (CPI) for patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. This can help to predict the extent of pulmonary fibrosis on high-reolution CT (HRCT). The authors are from Royal Brompton Hospital, King's College Hospital and Mayo Clinic.

Parameter:

(1) percent predicted DLco

(2) percent predicted FVC

(3) percent predicted FEV1

CPI = extent of disease on CT =

= 91.0 - (0.65 * (percent predicted DLco)) - (0.53 * (percent predicted FVC)) + (0.34 * (percent predicted FEV1))

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 7

• maximum score: around 80

• The higher the CPI the greater the extent of pulmonary fibrosis.

From Figure 4:

percent fibrosis on CT =

= (1.8868 * (CPI)) - 49.056
