Description

Lacy and Piccirillo developed a staging system for evaluating patients with recurrent squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. This Composite Laryngeal Recurrence Staging System (CLRSS) correlates with survival and can identify patients who may benefit from more aggressive therapy. The author are from Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital in Victoria, Australia, and Washington University in St. Louis.

Patient selection:

(1) squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx

(2) tumor free after initial treatment for > 2 months (else considered persistent disease)

Parameters:

(1) original TNM stage

(2) extent of recurrence (local, regional or distant)

Definitions for recurrence:

(1) local: within or immediately adjacent to original tumor site

(2) regional: nonlocal recurrence within the neck

(3) distant: metastases outside of the neck
