A corset may be worn for a number of reasons that may range from improving one's appearance to stabilizing a body region. A number of conditions have been ascribed to wearing a corset.
Risk factors for a problem:
(1) prolonged and frequent use
(2) excessive tightening in order to achieve a narrower waist
Conditions ascribed to wearing a corset:
(1) restricted breathing
(2) constipation
(3) retention of flatus
(4) "corset liver"
(5) hiatal hernia
(6) pain
Not all of the ascribed effects are evidence-based. Constipation for example is a problem for many women who have never worn a corset. Many of the problems reported by von Sommerring were later found to have other causation.
