Description

A vacuum constriction device can be effective for a man with erectile dysfunction. Complications are uncommon and rarely serious.


 

Adverse effects:

(1) petechiae or purpura

(2) skin necrosis

(3) pain

(4) numbness

(5) inability to ejaculate

 

Risk factors for complications due to underlying conditions:

(1) hypocoagulable state (bleeding disorder, anticoagulation therapy)

(2) hypercoagulable state

(3) sickle cell disease or other unstable hemoglobinopathy

(4) cold agglutinin disease (associated with temperature drop while using device)

(5) hyperviscosity syndrome

(6) impaired sensory function (paraplegia, etc)

 

Risk factors related to how the device is used:

(1) excessive vacuum application

(2) application of constriction band for > 30 minutes
