A ureteral stent may be associated with a number of complications that must be balanced with potential benefits.
Potential complications:
(1) pain
(2) migration
(3) urinary tract infection
(4) breakage
(5) encrustration
(6) obstruction
(7) bleeding
Many stents are used temporarily, after which they must be removed. This may involve a second cystoscopy or the use of a pull string on the distal end of the stent.
