Description

A male with sickle cell disease related priapism may be at increased risk for other complications of sickle cell disease. A male with one or more of these complications should be asked about priapism.

Comorbid complications of sickle cell disease seen in males with priapism:

(1) stroke

(2) chronic, restrictive lung disease (pulmonary hypertension)

(3) chronic renal failure (nephropathy)

(4) non-healing leg ulcers

where:

• Although not listed in the study, sickle cell disease related retinopathy might also be associated with priapism.

An adult male with priapism may be at an increased risk for mortality within 5 years of the onset (25% in current study).
