Description

Babesiosis can range from an asymptomatic to life-threatening illness.

Serious complications may include:

(1) disseminated intravascular coagulopathy (DIC)

(2) acute respiratory distress (ARDS) with respiratory failure

(3) congestive heart failure

(4) liver failure

(5) renal failure

(6) coma

(7) splenic rupture (especially with splenomegaly)

(8) shock

Most of these complications represent organ failures, with the mortality risk greater in patients with multi-organ failure (MOF).
