Description

A patient with Pierre Robin sequence may experience breathing and feeding difficulties due to displacement of the tongue. Often this may disappear with age. A tracheostomy may be placed to ensure an airway until the obstruction improves, but this may have a number of complications.


Patient selection: Pierre Robin sequence with pharyngeal obstruction

 

Complications may include:

(1) bleeding

(2) speech difficulties

(3) difficulty swallowing

(4) tracheal stenosis

(5) tracheocutaneous fistula

(6) infection

(7) suprastomal granuloma formation

(8) tracheal injury

(9) aspiration

(10) occlusion of the tracheostomy tube

(11) accidental decannulation or dislodgement

(12) failure to correct the pharyngeal obstruction
