Description

Laser refractive eye surgery is not without its hazards. These should be communicated to the patient as part of informed consent.

Patient selection: exclusion of patients with one or more contraindication

Potential complications of laser refractive eye surgery:

(1) dry eye

(2) haze, glare and problems with night vision

(3) reduction in best-corrected visual acuity

(4) infectious keratitis

(5) diffuse lamellar keratitis

(6) corneal ectasia

(7) problems with the the corneal flap (thin, incomplete and irregular flap creation)

where:

• Problems 4 to 7 can be potentially serious.

• Problems with flap creation are eliminated with flapless laser surgery using femtosecond laser intrastromal vision correction.

• The risk of infectious keratitis can be reduced by preoperative preparation and postoperative antibiotics.

• Problems with haze, glare and night vision are less common with newer laser techniques.
