Description

A patient with infective endocarditis may develop a number of complications, some of which can be life-threatening.


 

Complications of infective endocarditis may include:

(1) persistent fever, which may present as fever of unknown origin (FUO)

(2) congestive heart failure, which may be acute or chronic

(3) cardiac conduction defect

(4) intracardiac abscess

(5) peripheral abscess, including mycotic aneurysm

(6) stroke

(7) other systemic emboli which can range from small (Roth spot) to large with limb ischemia

(8) acute renal failure (>= 50% from baseline serum creatinine)

(9) multi-organ failure

 

Since the patient may require prolonged parenteral antibiotic therapy, the patient is at risk for complications of antibiotic complications.
