Complications of Hepatitis E Viral Hepatitis

Usually hepatitis E causes an acute hepatitis that resolves completely. Occasionally more serious complications may occur.

Complication	Risk Factor
fulminant hepatitis with hepatic encephalopathy	pregnancy
chronic hepatitis	organ transplant recipient
cirrhosis (very rare)	organ transplant recipient with a history of chronic hepatitis
intrauterine fetal demise	maternal HEV

Diagnosis requires:

(1) demonstration of the hepatitis E virus (PCR, other)

(2) exclusion of other conditions (acetaminophen poisoning, other forms of viral hepatitis, Yellow Fever, etc)
