A large food bolus impacted in the esophagus may have a number of complications.
Patient selection: esophageal impaction of a food bolus
Complications may include:
(1) caustic injury of the esophagus from reflux
(2) esophageal perforation
(3) pleural empyema
(4) aortoesophageal fistula
(5) aspiration pneumonia
(6) airway obstruction
(7) sudden death
