Abdominal liposuction may be associated with a number of complications, some of which may be life-threatening.
Traumatic:
(1) perforation of an abdominal organ from the aspiration trochar
Reactions to medications used in the procedure:
(1) allergic
(2) toxic overdose:
Thromboembolic:
(1) deep vein thrombosis
(2) pulmonary embolism
(3) fat embolism
Hemorrhagic:
(1) hematoma
(2) intra-abdominal hemorrhage
Infection:
(1) cellulitis
(2) abscess
(3) sepsis
(4) necrotizing fasciitis
Neurologic:
(1) paresthesias
(2) hyperesthesia
Cosmetic:
(1) body asymmetry
(2) keloid or hypertrophic scar
Respiratory:
(1) acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS)
(2) acute pulmonary edema
(3) pneumothorax
Other:
(1) seroma
Patient factors to consider prior to surgery:
(1) hypercoagulable or hypocoagulable states
(2) immunosuppression
(3) history of keloid formation or abnormal scarring
(4) allergy to medications
