Description

Protobothrops mucrosquamatus is a pit viper found in Asia. Prompt administration of antivenom is associated with a favorable course.


Synonym: brown-spotted pit viper, Taiwanese habu

 

Complications following a bite include:

(1) local pain, swelling and ecchymosis

(2) wound necrosis

(3) coagulopathy with thrombocytopenia

(4) rhabdomyolysis

(5) possible acute renal failure

 

Risk factors for wound necrosis:

(1) bite on finger (presumably also toe)

(2) bullae and blister formation

(3) wound infection

 

Failure to receive antivenom or late administration of antivenom may be associated with local and systemic complications.
