Description

Removal of a ureteral stone can result in a number of potential complications.

Complications that occur with some frequency:

(1) urinary tract infection

(2) sepsis

(3) injury to the urethral wall

(4) stricture

(5) steinstrasse (following lithotripsy)

where:

• Steinstrasse = street of stones (referring to a large number of small stone fragments coating the inner surface of the ureter). To get a large number of small stones a relatively large stone is needed.

Rare complications are loss of the kidney or death of the patient.
