Skin disinfection may be associated with a number of complications.
Complications related to the chemicals used:
(1) chemical skin burn
(2) allergic skin reaction
Risk for complications associated with the chemicals used:
(1) thin and/or sensitive skin
(2) atopic individual
(3) caustic chemicals
Complications secondary to suboptimal skin disinfection:
(1) false positive cultures, which can lead to unnecessary antibiotic therapy or diagnostic tests
(2) surgical site infection
(3) contaminated blood product
