Description

Repair of hypospadias may be accompanied by a number of complications.


Clues to the presence of a complication:

(1) unplanned readmission

(2) unplanned reoperation (with exclusion of staged surgical repair)

 

Complications may be:

(1) within the first 30 days related to infection or other surgical complication

(2) within the first year

(3) delayed (up to 5 or more years after the procedure)

 

Complications may include:

(1) infection (surgical, UTI related to stricture, etc)

(2) urethral fistula

(3) meatal stenosis

(4) urethral stricture

(5) urethral diverticulum

(6) cosmetic defect

 

The rate of complications:

(1) tends to be increased with more severe hypospadias

(2) tends to be increased with complexity of the repair

(3) tends to be increased in proximal hypospadias

(3) tends to be lower in patients with private health insurance
