Description

An older adult male with chronic renal failure may develop benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). This may be asymptomatic while the patient is anuric. Problems can arise once urine flow has been restored after a renal transplant.

Patient selection: adult male with renal transplant

Complications:

(1) acute urinary retention associated with bladder outlet obstruction

(2) urinary tract infection (UTI)

(3) post-obstructive failure of the transplanted kidney

(4) need for indwelling catheter

It is important to evaluate a male for BPH prior to a renal transplant. If significant then an intervention should be planned prior to the transplant surgery.
