Description

An esophageal stricture may be associated with a range of complications. Some may occur during treatment, while others can occur if it is left untreated.


Complications associated with untreated esophageal stricture:

(1) food impact

(2) aspiration of esophageal contents

(3) asthma/bronchospasm associated with aspiration

(4) severe chest pain

(5) chronic esophagitis

(6) perforation with or without fistula formation

(7) malnutrition

 

Complications that may occur during treatment of the stricture

(1) esophageal perforation

(2) bleeding

(3) aspiration pneumonia

(4) complications of anesthesia

(5) sepsis

(6) proximal displacement of esophageal stent with airway obstruction

(7) trauma during stent removal

(8) new or recurrent stricture

(9) chest pain
